Polish Medical Mission is helping Haiti again, and our target group are children who live in this one of the poorest countries in the world (ca. 80% of the society live in extreme poverty). Due to its geographical location, Haiti is systematically affected by natural disasters. In 2010, as a result of the greatest earthquake in 200 years, approx. 70,000 people were killed; 250,000 were injured, and over 1.5 million were made homeless. In 2016, the island was struck by a calamity again. Hurricane Matthew caused enormous destruction there; the number of fatalities was over 1,000 and 1.5 million people lost their homes and their livelihoods. Haiti has not risen from the ruins until today. In these conditions there are children living, doomed to starvation and suffering, often without any educational opportunities and without any perspectives for a better future.
Our activities will consist in supporting the activity of the SAKALA centre that provides care for over 350 people aged 4 to 25. The centre, which is located in the poorest quarter of the capital of Haiti, Port Au Prince Cite Soleil, is an oasis of tranquillity and a place of free education for the poorest children of Cite Soleill. It provides an alternative for children growing up in environments of youth gangs, full of drugs and violence. More information on the centre: http://www.sakala-haiti.org/
The first phase of the project is aimed at supporting education, including health education for the people cared for by the centre; an extensive fact-finding mission concerning the local healthcare system and identification of the immediate needs and determination of the further development of the support.
On behalf of Polish Medical Mission, Michał Wieczorek, Łukasz Mazurowski and Kamil Gabarski will travel to the location.
WE INVITE YOU TO SUPPORT THE INITIATIVE
