Polish Medical Mission buys medications for Aleppo
Polish Medical Mission has already collected 90% of the amount that is needed in order for two Syrian hospitals – western Aleppo and Idlib – to be able to function for another two months and receive the injured and ill who are fleeing from the ruined city. On 6 February, PMM workers go to Gaziantep in order to meet up with doctor Mansur from the Balsam Medical Organization, hand over the medications and determine which children might come to Krakow for treatment. The purchase of the medications is going to be documented on an ongoing basis and the coverage will be available on www.pmm.org.pl and in the PMM profile on Facebook. PMM workers are constantly in touch with the Polish diplomatic representation in Ankara.
The amount collected by the Polish Medical Mission – the target is PLN 80,000, i.e. USD 20,000 – will enable two hospital to operate efficiently for another two months. The hospitals are run by the Syrian medical organisation Balsam Medical Organization whose 14 doctors perform operations in 2 hospitals, 3 healthcare stations and 2 small first-aid stations. Nearly 70% of patients are refugees from Aleppo and the majority of operations are amputations.
Polish Medical Mission has been collecting money for them since 28 December. There is a shortage of general anaesthetics, antibiotics, dressings. One of the greatest needs are prostheses. Due to untreated infections and wounds, a lot of children and teenagers had to have theirs arms or legs amputated.
PMM filed a request to the Mayor of the City of Krakow with regard to inviting five amputee children for selecting prostheses for them and for rehabilitation. Prof Jacek Majchrowski decided to support this initiative and spoke in favour of financing the children’s treatment. We have asked for an appointment with the Mayor and are waiting for the date to be fixed.
