Ernis Kowalski is 12 years old and lives in a small town in Bashkiria, an autonomous republic of the Russian Federation east of the Urals. His father is Polish and his mother is Bashkir. He plays the flute; he received one thanks to the involvement of Marianna Ferenc, a humanitarian worker, from a musician of the Great Theatre—National Opera. The instrument is the most expensive object in the whole town. Ernis goes to a music school, plays in the school orchestra and takes part in sports competitions.
The boy was born with a defect; he had six fingers on each of his hands and six toes on each of his feet. At the operation, the doctors decided, against previous arrangements, that they would remove all the extra fingers and toes at a time during one procedure. For this reason, 18-month-old Ernis was in a coma longer than had been planned; the operation took 6 hours, and he came out first after 20 hours. As a consequence, the child suffered from weakness, sudden fainting and falls. Today, thanks to huge efforts of the parents and doctors, the boy is doing better now but he is forced to travel to Ufa, the capital of Bashkiria, to have follow-up visits. His parents spent all the money earned on daily living and the boy’s treatment. His mum is a teacher and his dad takes up seasonal jobs. Extra flute lessons or a holiday trip for Ernis are beyond the means of the family.
‘There is not the slightest chance for Ernis to travel anywhere; in his whole life, he has never been outside his town save for the hospital in Ufa’, says Marianna Ferenc, ‘There is nothing good in store for this kid; he has no perspectives unless someone supports him. Unless we support him’.
Together we want to help Ernis develop his talent. We start by raising money for a holiday trip for him. We need PLN 2,000 for a camp as well as several hundred zlotys to buy him some clothes and shoes for the occasion.
