In the autumn, two PMM volunteers, an internal disease doctor, Magdalena Kopczyńska and a nurse, Jolanta Frątczak, will support the medical team of the Spanish organization Salvamento Maritimo Solidario in camp Campo Vial, Chios, Greece.
Chíos is a beautiful Greek island 7 km from the Turkish coast. Most may know it as an attraction for tourists seeking the sun. However, it is also the place of the drama of refugees who got there from Turkey and await the outcome of their asylum procedure. Currently there are about 3,000 people on the island who are waiting for a decision in their case. Sometimes long months. They camp in tents on unprotected grounds. The Spanish organization Salvamento Maritimo Humanitario (http://www.smh.eus/index.php/en/about-us/), as part of the project of basic medical assistance in the refugee camp Campo Vial provides medical assistance to refugees staying in the camp, as well as custody in anticipation of expulsion and at landfall (beach) and during the arrival at the port.
Salvamento Marítimo Humanitario is a Spanish non-governmental organization registered in Greece. The project is being carried out in cooperation with the Greek Center for Control and Prevention at Chios KEELNO and with the port police at Chios.
